I transitioned from music into data. It was one of the most difficult challenges of my professional career and I can attribute my eventual success to leveraging transferrable skills.
As a composer, I was very detail-oriented and creative-minded, always seeking to find innovative solutions to address client needs. When seeking a more stable career path, I realized data jobs would allow me to tap into the same skillset, just in a different way. I used my detail-oriented brain to learn data fundamentals in a systematic, disciplined way. And I used my creative brain to design a visually engaging portfolio of projects that would showcase my new proficiencies. The combination allowed me to successfully convince hiring managers that I could not only do the required work, but push it in a unique and refreshing direction.
I went on to become a senior data professional in different companies for a variety of roles ranging from data journalism to data science and data storytelling. And now it is my goal as a professional coach and trainer to help others on a similar career journey.
